‘It’s a major award!’

Couple years ago, there was a Facebook meme called “25 Things About Me.”

If you weren’t on Facebook then (or you’re my parents), the idea was to list 25 things about yourself, then tag 25 friends, who would do the same.

The trick was to avoid being dull or oversharing.

One person I know listed 25 mostly sad things about his or her childhood, and most of the comments from his or her friends were along the lines of, “Call me if you need to talk.” He or she eventually posted a second list of 25 happy or funny things. Yeah, it was awkward. (No, it wasn’t me.)

Well, this major award thing is kind of like that, although, I hope, not awkward.

There’s a meme in blogland right now called the Versatile Blogger Award. The idea is you pick 7 blogs you really like and tell the world about them  — and also list 7 surprising things about yourself.

Maura, who blogs at 36×37 (which I like a lot) wrote this morning to say she likes my blog enough to give it 1 of her 7 Versatile Blogger Awards, which was a nice surprise and very appreciated.

So, to keep the meme going and give some well-deserved praise to some blogs I like, let’s get started. Here are 7 surprising things about me:

  1. I’m 6-foot-3, but I don’t think of myself as being tall until I see someone my size, then I wonder where he gets his clothes.
  2. I’m colorblind. I see primary colors fine, but some greens look brown and some purples look blue, especially in bad light. This is why I didn’t major in art. I usually don’t mention that I’m colorblind because people like to “test” me. They’ll go, “What color is that?” God, that’s annoying.
  3. I’m not superstitious. I don’t believe in the paranormal. I don’t believe in ghosts.
  4. When I was 3 or 4, I had a toy rocket. Once, the base of the rocket stood on its side and rolled across the floor by itself. My mother saw it happen, too. I can’t explain it.
  5. I hate peaches. Sometimes, I’ll say I’m allergic so people won’t bug me about why I don’t like peaches. I just don’t, OK?
  6. The most useful class I took in college was Gourmet Cooking. The most useful class in high school: typing. (The most useless: geometry. Twenty-five years on, I’ve never had to calculate the volume of a cone, and I never will.)
  7. I was a DJ in high school — not a cool DJ who scratches records, but a “It’s 3:15 — 15 past 3 — and 46 degrees out there. Don’t forget, Kentucky plays Alabama tonight. The pre-game starts at 6:30. Right now, by request, here’s Loverboy with ‘Turn Me Loose’” kind of DJ. You don’t hear that style of DJ on the radio any more, and to anyone who might have heard me then, I am sorry.

Now, on to the Versatile Blogger Awards!

When I was coming up with a list, I thought of more than 7, so I drew these out of a hat. If your blog isn’t here, please don’t feel slighted. I really do like it a lot:

  • Agrigirl’s Blog, a well-written blog about “life, leadership and community supported agriculture.”
  • The Florida Blogger: Florida isn’t just theme parks and T-shirt shops. There’s this whole other Florida most tourists never see. That’s what he writes about.
  • The Friande: A very smart blog about books — specifically, the 100 books the blogger, Ilona, plans to read before she dies. It’s also about other things, too.
  • From the Desk of the Codger: He usually begins his posts with a chipper greeting like, “Ahoy!” then talks about whatever’s on his mind. Yesterday, he wondered why no one builds space needles anymore. “Soon, it’s going to become a forgotten art altogether.” I’d never thought of that.
  • Life in Full: Knight’s header describes her blog as “lessons in living from elegant women,” including her 8-year-old. It’s a nice read, plus I know her, and she’s a nice person.
  • On a Clear Day I Can Read Forever: A blog about books, by someone else I know. Nancy was book critic at the Orlando Sentinel for 20 years. She’s one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. Fun fact: Nancy and her cousins write mystery novels under the name Caroline Cousins.
  • Shutterboo: Brooke’s “about” page says her blog is “a bunch of random crap accompanied by pictures,” but, really, she’s a good photographer. I don’t know her, but she’s from Kentucky, my home state, so bonus points for that.
  • Adventures with Abigail: Yes, this makes 8 blogs instead of 7, but Doug and Allison haven’t updated their blog since May, so I think it’s done, but I really did enjoy it while it lasted, so let’s call this a lifetime achievement award. It’s about their adventures adopting their second child from China. It was really nicely done.

  1. This is awesome, congrats on your award!
Also, thank you for including me on your list (or, at least, putting my name into a hat).
I’ve discovered some great bloggers (particularly From the Desk of the Codger; very amusing).
… & I think you’ll realise you’re tall when you stand next to me. I’m five foot. Eek.

    • Thanks, you’re welcome, the Codger’s posts always make me smile, and, no, I probably wouldn’t notice our height difference unless someone took a picture or I caught our reflection in a mirror or something. Weird, huh?

    • Dear Mr. Pack and The Friande,

Thank you for the prestigious award and the kind words, respectively. I am glad you have been enjoying my articles. Now I have some new Blogs to read in my spare time!

      Best regards,
      The Codger

Thank you, Todd, for the recognition and kind words. And I love that I got bonus points! I’ll probably lose them when I say this though… I do not like UK… UofL’s my alma mater and where my heart belongs. Can’t WAIT for football season to start!

    • U of L, huh? I should make a Rick Pitino joke, but I’ll be nice. (For anyone who doesn’t know, Pitino is the basketball coach involved in a sex scandal. He testified in court recently that he had sexual relations with a woman for 15 seconds. He’s much better at coaching basketball.) Anyway, I really do enjoy your blog!

Yesterday, it was announced over the PA at work: The verdict is guilty on all six charges. It’s unfortunate that Ricky P didn’t think before he acted… but he did stand up to Sypher for the extortion. The defense didn’t even call any witnesses – I hope Ms. Sypher doesn’t drop the soap!

      • Yeah, she sounds like a pip. I love the fact the verdict in her extortion trial was announced at work. Only in Kentucky!

Now, see? This is exactly why I selected you for the award–this post made me laugh out loud right there in the middle of the Starbucks line. So funny.

As for that “out of a hat” thing, I received so much slack for that. But now you see why it’s useful, right?

Congrats again, and thanks for a good laugh this morning.

    • You’re welcome, and thanks again. Hope you have a great weekend!

  4. I’d like to thank all the little people, oh, wait, I guess that should be “I’d like to thank the tall person who pulled my name out of a hat even though I did a recent blog post in which I extolled the virtues of peaches.” Caroline Cousins also thanks him.

I’m going to try and pass this award on, but lifetime achievement goes to my friend and former colleague Sean Holton, whose Same Time Tomorrow blog at http://seanholton.wordpress.com is a wonderful, funny, inspiring chronicle of his so-far winning battle with bgrain cancer. The best!

    • I know, I know. Soon as I posted this, I checked Facebook and read Sean’s latest post and realized I was an idiot for not including his blog, regardless. Sean, besides being a terrific writer, is also a great guy, just a fundamentally decent human being, and one of the best editors I ever worked with.

I don’t like peaches, either. They just don’t taste good to me!

As for geometry, if you’ve ever played pool or golf as an adult, you’ve used it. Just sayin’. ;-)

    • Obviously, you’ve never seen me shoot pool or play golf!

      • Renee said:

Well, see? You should have paid more attention in geometry! lol
